Offshore Wind Energy Summary
South Australia is already a world leader in penetration of wind and solar in its electricity grid. With a state renewable energy target of 100% net renewable energy generation by 2030, this capacity is set to continue increasing in coming years. With strong offshore wind resources in areas suitable for fixed bottom foundations, offshore wind may present an appealing option for an expanding renewable energy sector. In August 2023, the South Australian State Government opposed the inclusion of South Australian waters in the Commonwealth’s Southern Ocean offshore wind area, citing impacts to commercial and recreational fisheries, and proximity to marine parks.
