Illawarra

The Illawarra region is located on the southeast coast of New South Wales. In June 2024, the Illawarra offshore wind zone became the fourth area in Australia to open up for feasibility licence applications, with outcomes from these applications expected in 2025. Illawarra has traditionally been a coal mining region, and as such already hosts major energy, port, and transport infrastructure. With the shift away from coal and towards renewables, the region is undergoing a major shift towards renewable generation and was declared a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) by the Minister for Energy in February 2023.

Wind resources off the coast of Illawarra are strong, with the highest average wind speeds approaching 9 m/s. Due to a sharp drop in water depths off the Illawarra coast, fixed-bottom turbines are unlikely to be viable, and floating wind turbines will need to be used.
