The Australian Government declared an area in the Southern Ocean, off western Victoria, as suitable for offshore wind development on 6 March 2024. Feasibility licence applications for the area closed in July 2024, with assessment outcomes expected to be released late 2024/early 2025.
The region is home to Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter, which consumed 10 per cent of Victoria’s electricity. The area also features ideal conditions for offshore wind, with average wind speeds of around 9 m/s, and water depths below 50m extending from 15 to 30km along most of the coastline.
The Victoria has made a commitment to reach 2GW of offshore wind by 2032, 4GW by 2035, and 9 GW by 2040. The Victorian Government has also released ‘Offshore Wind Implementation Statements’ 1-3. These statements outline the procurement and support package for the first tranche of offshore wind in Victoria. This may include a contract for difference, as well as complementary contributions for capital and financing. Continued Government support will be crucial in driving an offshore wind industry in Victoria.
