The Minister for Climate Change and Energy proposed an area in the Indian Ocean off the Bunbury region, Western Australia for offshore wind on the 20 February 2024. The proposed area covers 7600km2 and is set back at least 20kms from the shore. The region has strong offshore wind resources with accessible mean wind speeds of between 8.75m/s to 9.75m/s, and large areas suitable for bottom-fixed foundations.
The Western Australian Government has recently committed to a ‘whole-of-government’ 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 80% below 2020 levels, together with a commitment to close al state-owned coal-fired power stations by 2030. The WA Government communicated in mid-2020 that the expectation is that the electricity demand will grow by 2-3 times by 2043. The development of new variable renewable energy will be needed to meet this demand, which will likely include offshore wind.
