The Australian Government has declared that offshore wind will play a ‘pivotal role’ in Australia’s clean energy transition and ambition to become a renewable energy superpower. Offshore wind can offer significant market and non-market benefits that onshore renewables cannot.
The benefits of offshore wind are importantly also being recognised at state level. The Victorian Government has committed to support at least 9GW of offshore wind by 2040. New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia are likely to follow suit and are all undertaking detailed appraisals of offshore wind as part of their future energy mix planning. As of June 2024, feasibility licence applications have been granted for two of Australia’s six offshore wind zones, Gippsland and the Hunter, with the applications for the Southern Ocean area awaiting outcomes. Australia remaining offshore wind areas, Illawarra, Bass Strait off Northern Tasmania, and the Indian Ocean off Bunbury will follow in the future.
