Tasmania possesses Australia’s finest offshore wind resources, featuring favourable average wind speeds surpassing 9-10 m/s and suitable areas for fixed foundation installations. In October 2023, the Bass Strait Region was declared suitable for offshore renewable energy. While the Tasmanian Government have not yet specified targets for offshore wind, its commitment to achieving a 200 percent renewable energy target by 2040 indicates a strong inclination towards embracing new renewable technologies. Notably, their Hydrogen Action Plan sets ambitious aims to establish a significant hydrogen export industry commencing in 2030. This industry’s growth potential surpasses the capacity of onshore renewables alone, thereby facilitating the emergence of offshore wind developments.
