The Taranaki region is located between Auckland and Wellington on New Zealand’s west coast. Many developers have shown interest in this region for offshore wind development, and several projects have been proposed by these different developers. Winds off the coast of Taranaki are strong and consistent, and there are sizeable areas suitable for bottom fixed foundations.
In addition to having ideal natural conditions for offshore wind, the region also contains much of the associated infrastructure required to support offshore wind due to a significant oil and gas industry in the region. The bulk of New Zealand’s 4500 oil and gas workers are based in Taranaki. Many of these workers could be provided alternative employment by an offshore wind industry, with 68% of skills overlapping between the two industries.
