New South Wales is Australia’s largest state by population, with over 8 million residents as of 2022. New South Wales remains heavily reliant on coal-fired power plants for electricity generation, many of which are set to retire soon. By the early 2030s, at least 8.9GW (47TWh/y) of coal (baseload) generation will have retired, posing a significant supply challenge. In November 2020, the NSW Government announced its Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which sets targets for 12GW of new renewables by 2030.
In June 2024, the outcomes of the round of Feasibility Licence Applications were announced for the declared offshore wind area off the coast of the Hunter. Additionally, an area off the coast of Illawarra has been declared suitable for the development of offshore wind.
