Tasmania is home to the best offshore wind resource in Australia, with accessible mean wind speeds above 9-10 m/s, and areas suitable for bottom fixed foundations. In October 2023, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy proposed an area in the Bass Strait Region off the coast of Northern Tasmania as suitable for offshore renewable energy.
While the Tasmanian Government is yet to set any specific targets for offshore wind, it has with its 200 per cent renewable energy target by 2040 demonstrated a desire for new renewables. More importantly it has, in its Hydrogen Action Plan, set goals for a significant hydrogen export industry from 2030. Such industry has the potential to drive a demand that cannot be fulfilled strictly based on onshore renewables, hence paving the way for offshore wind development.
