Offshore Wind Energy Summary
Waikato is the fourth largest region in New Zealand, with coastlines stretching along the north and northeast of the North Island. The Waikato region has a combination of excellent offshore wind resources, access to existing transmission infrastructure, and growing energy demand. This makes the region ideal for offshore wind development.
Multiple projects have already been proposed off the coast of Waikato, with more expected after the introduction of a proposed regulatory regime in mid-2025.
