Western Australia has strong offshore wind resources with accessible mean wind speeds of between 8.75m/s to 9.75m/s, and large areas suitable for bottom-fixed foundations. On the 30 August 2024, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy declared an area in the Indian Ocean off the Bunbury region for offshore wind. The declared area covers 3995km2 and is at least 30 kilometres from shore. The area is located offshore between Dawesville and Cape Naturaliste,. WA. The Government has recently committed to a ‘whole-of-government’ 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 80% below 2020 levels, together with a commitment of closing all state-owned coal-fired power plants by 2030. The WA Government communicated in mid-2020 that the expectation is that the electricity demand will grow by 2-3 times by 2043. The development of new variable renewable energy will be needed to meet this demand, which may include offshore wind.
