In June 2024, the outcome of the round of Feasibility Licence Applications in the Hunter offshore wind area was announced. One project was granted a Feasibility Licence in the area. This region has strong wind resources, with average wind speeds of between 8.1 to 8.9 m/s at 150 metres. Due to a sharp drop in water depths off the Hunter Coast, fixed bottom turbines are not viable. As a result, projects in the area will need to employ floating technology.
The Hunter Region has well developed port and transport infrastructure, which crucial for a developing offshore wind industry. As offshore wind projects off the coast connect into the Hunter Region, where coal-fired generation is exiting, it enables the re-purposing of existing transmission assets that might otherwise be stranded over time.
