Offshore Wind Energy Summary
On 5 August 2022, the Bass Strait off Gippsland, located in Victoria’s southeast, was announced as Australia’s first offshore renewable energy ‘area for consideration’. Since then, a period of feasibility licence applications and assessment was undertaken in 2023, with the Federal Government announcing the award of 12 offshore wind feasibility licences in the region in May 2024.
Wind speeds in the Bass Strait off the coast of Gippsland are favourable – with average speeds above 8 m/s. This, combined with the shallow coastal regions (below 50m of water depth) that extend 20 to 35km from the coast makes this an ideal location for offshore wind development.
The Victoria has made a commitment to reach 2GW of offshore wind by 2032, 4GW by 2035, and 9 GW by 2040. The Victorian Government has also released ‘Offshore Wind Implementation Statements’ 1-3. These statements outline the procurement and support package for the first tranche of offshore wind in Victoria. This may include a contract for difference, as well as complementary contributions for capital and financing. Continued Government support will be crucial in driving an offshore wind industry in Victoria.
